Civil Air Patrol
Civilian Auxiliary to the United States Air Force
The primary functions of the US Civil Air Patrol are airborne search and rescue missions, assisting the US Air Force as requested, assisting with border patrol and homeland security, and providing aeronautical education and training programs. They perform 95 percent of nation’s inland search and rescue missions. Members of the Civil Air Patrol are civilians and are unpaid volunteers. The Civil Air Patrol was formed during World War 2 by civilian pilots to help defend the United States by keeping an eye from the sky on the US coastline and border with Mexico. Civil Air Patrol planes were not armed, however, during the war, the Civil Air Patrol was given limited authorization to drop bombs on and destroy German U-boats spotted near the US coastline. After the war, the Civil Air Patrol became an auxiliary agency for the newly created US Air Force.
