The City of York PA was used as the capital of the the newly forming United States from September 1777 to June 1778. Between  the years 1776 and 1800 several cities served as the acting capital city, until in 1800 Washing DC was made the perminate capital city. York PA has often considered itself the first capital of the US, and has that stated on some marking on its police vehicles. However most history books state that Philadelphia, PA was the first capital of the US. The location of the capital city was moved several times because of the fighting of the revolutionary war. From Dec 1776 to March 1777, Baltimore MD was a temporary capital city, then back to Philadelphia. After fighting around Philadelphia increased again, they moved the capital to Lancaster PA in Sept 1777 for one day before moving a few more miles to York PA.
