Chrysler's new compact cars, the Dodge Aspen and Plymouth Volare were introduced for model year 1976 as a replacement for the aging Dodge Dart and Plymouth Valiant. For year 1977 the Aspen and Volare became available with a police package. The rear drive F-body platform was replaced in the consumer market by the new front drive K-car (Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant) in 1981, and in the police car market by the F-body based platform of the  M-body Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Gran Fury. With the end of the production of the prior mid-sized Chrysler B-body cars in 1978 (Dodge Monaco and Plymouth Fury), the F-body filled the void as the mid-sized patrol car, as cars became smaller, vehicles once considered compact were not considered mid-sized or intermediate. A 6 cyl or optional V-8 engines powered the Aspen and Volare police cars. 1980 saw a restyle to the front end of the Aspen and Volare for their final year.
