For 2011, Ford introduced a completely new Explorer as a front or all wheel drive V-6 powered crossover. This new Explorer shares a platform with then also new Ford Taurus. A full police package became available for model year 2013 based on the new Explorer and was given the title Police Interceptor Utility. At the time of it's initial release in year 2012 (as an early 2013 model year vehicle) , the  engine that was used was a 305 hp 3.7 L V6, shared with the Ford Mustang and F-150. For 2014 model year, an optional engine was the  365 hp 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 (shared with the Ford Police Interceptor Sedan and Ford Taurus SHO).  As the Police Interceptor Utility was based on the same platform as the sedan, and had simular performane, with much more cargo room, it quickly became the best selling police vehicle in the United States outselling the sedan and competitor's cars and suvs from Dodge and Chevrolet.
