Dodge returned to the police car market after a 12-year hiatus with the 2002 Dodge Intrepid. This is the first police package "car" from Chrysler since 1989, when it discontinued the Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Gran Fury. A police package was available on the Jeep Cherokee sport utility from 1992-2001. The police package Dodge Intrepid will be based on the retail Dodge Intrepid R/T, with beefed up police package components. It will be powered by the 3.5 litre V-6 that was used in the retail Chrysler 300M and Dodge Intrepid R/T. The Dodge Intrepid is a V-6 front drive car. Many departments in the US and Canada have been using retail Intrepid for police work for years. While these cars were not police package vehicles, most departments that used them seemed to like them. Chrysler had been considering a police package for the Intrepid since the mid 1990's, but it never got beyond the testing stages. The 2002-2004 Police Intrepid competed in the police car marked with the rear drive V-8 Ford Crown Victoria, and the front drive V-6 Chevrolet Impala. The Dodge Intrpid was disconinuted after the 2004 model year, replaced by the all new reardrive, V-8 powered Dodge Magnum and Dodge Charger. Police versions of the Magnum and Charger have been anounced (see their seperate section). The front-wheel-drive Dodge Intrepid earned a 4 percent share of the approximately 70,000 unit U.S. market.
